How to Choose a Cybersecurity Keynote Speaker

Published · By Thiago Vieira · 3 min read · Speaking

The right cybersecurity keynote speaker combines real-world experience with the ability to make a technical topic matter to your specific audience. Credentials help, but stories from real cases, audience fit and a clear takeaway are what attendees remember.

Start with your audience, not the speaker

Before looking at speakers, answer three questions:

  • Who is in the room? Executives, founders, security professionals, students or a general corporate audience?
  • What should change after the talk? Awareness, a specific behavior, a strategic decision?
  • What is the event's theme? Innovation, risk, AI, entrepreneurship, compliance?

A talk that is perfect for a hacker conference can fail at a board retreat, and the reverse.

What to look for

  1. Real experience. Has the speaker actually investigated incidents, built security products or worked cases? Practitioners bring stories nobody else can.
  2. Translation skill. Watch a video. Can they explain a complex threat to a non-technical audience without dumbing it down?
  3. Relevant topics. Ransomware, deepfakes, social engineering, AI risk and cyber resilience are current concerns for most audiences.
  4. Clear takeaways. The best talks leave people with something to do the next morning.
  5. Track record. Previous stages, recordings and references from organizers.
  6. Flexibility. Can they tailor the talk, join a panel, moderate or run a workshop?

Questions to ask before booking

  • Can you share a full recording of a recent talk?
  • How do you adapt this talk for our audience?
  • What real cases or examples will you use?
  • Do you offer in-person and remote formats? In which languages?
  • What do you need from us: AV, timing, briefing call?

Red flags

  • Only generic fear statistics and no real cases.
  • A one-size-fits-all deck.
  • Heavy product pitching from the stage.
  • No recordings available.

Brief the speaker well

Share the audience profile, the event's goal, the agenda around the slot and any sensitivities. A 30-minute briefing call makes a good talk great.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good cybersecurity keynote speaker?

Real-world experience, the ability to translate technical topics for the specific audience, concrete stories and a clear takeaway that changes behavior.

How far in advance should I book a keynote speaker?

Ideally several months before the event, especially for international speakers and busy conference seasons. Earlier booking also leaves time to tailor the talk.

Should the talk be technical or non-technical?

It depends on the audience. Executives and general audiences need stories and decisions; security teams can go deeper into methods. A good speaker adapts the same expertise to both.

Which languages does Thiago Vieira speak in?

English and Portuguese, in person or remotely.
